It is not often that students get to gain real world experience and take on managerial roles while studying. However, Cheers' new partnership scheme with two polytechnics lets them do just that. Launched in 2005, this partnership programme allows students to take on management positions within the schools' Cheers outlets for a period of nine to 20 weeks as part of their curriculum. They undergo practice-based learning by taking charge of the outlets and performing duties such as manpower planning, stock management, sales analysis and visual merchandising. And with minimal supervision, the realism of the scheme enhances the students' readiness for the workplace. So far, it has been given the thumbs up all round. "Our students learn as we get in tune with industry practices through compliance with Cheers' corporate guidelines. Overall, it has been and will continue to be an invaluable learning opportunity for our students," says Ms Yong Oi Yin, a Business Marketing lecturer in one of the polytechnics.
